We are proud to announce awards, honors, and distinguished presentations received/completed by our faculty and residents over the last six months. Please join us in congratulating them for their accomplishments as well as all of the hard work that went into earning recognition!
Awards and Promotions
Dr. Carlton “Ralph” Daniel, Professor, was named 2024 Onychologist of the Year from the Council for Nail Disorders at the annual AAD meeting in San Diego, California. This award is given to an individual who has supported nails by research, publication, lecturing, mentoring and nail innovation. We are grateful to Dr. Daniel's longstanding support of UMMC Dermatology and congratulate him on this honor!
Dr. Vinayak “Vinny” Nahar was a 2023-2024 recipient of UMMC’s Trailblazer Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education. The Trailblazer Award recognizes the faculty’s time and effort to educate future physicians. Nominated by their peers, recipients of the award are recognized as effective teachers who engage, inspire, and mentor learners, demonstrate teaching innovations in curriculum design, and serve as a catalyst for enhancing teaching and learning.
Drs. Allison Cruse and Chelsea Mockbee have both received promotions to Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology! This was recently approved by UMMC leadership at the recommendation of the School of Medicine Promotion and Tenure Committee as well as UMMC’s Executive Faculty. Dr. Cruse and Dr. Mockbee are both well-deserving of this accomplishment, please join us in congratulating them!
What’s New Annual Symposium
This year’s “What's New in Medical & Surgical Dermatology Update,” an annual event hosted by the University of Mississippi Medical Center faculty, was held at the Refuge Hotel & Conference Center in Flowood, MS on April 19, 2024. There were 50 attendees, and there was an excellent presence by industry vendors. Dr. Margaret "Molly" Webb had the honor of providing the first annual Stephen Helms, MD Distinguished Lecture. The Department of Dermatology is excited to debut this annual lecture series in honor of Dr. Helms, a founding member of our department who continues to serve as a patient mentor, knowledgeable teacher, and steadfast advocate for quality improvement and patient care. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for making this event successful.

Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance & International Inflammatory Skin Disease Summit
Dr. Thy Huynh was selected to present initial findings as the first author of the TIMBER ichthyosis study at the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance in Atlanta, GA, in November of 2023. Our Dermatology Research Team also presented current findings in atopic dermatitis and alopecia areata as first authors at the renowned International Inflammatory Skin Disease Summit in Vienna, Austria in November of 2023.
9th Annual Southern Dermatology Consortium
The Southern Dermatology Consortium’s (SDC) 9th Annual SDC Resident Research Day (SDCRRD) was held February 2-3, 2024. This year, the SDCCRD is hosted by our colleagues at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, AR. The SDC is planned in collaboration with Dermatology Departments at the UAMS, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Atlantic Dermatology Society Annual Meeting
Dr. Robert Brodell was an invited speaker at the 101st Atlantic Dermatology Society Annual Meeting in Hershey, Pennsylvania on April 21, 2024. He provided a lecture on procedural dermatology using clinical pathologic correlation - before the blade touches the skin!
